A study by application performance experts Intechnica
With the forever growing use of cloud computing, digital consultancy Intechnica asked the question How fast in the Cloud?. Using its expertise in performance testing and development, the consultancy created an ecommerce application, deployed it to various platforms and then tested its performance under load.
The platforms tested were:
- Microsoft Azure.
- virtualDCS's public cloud powered by VMware.
- Amazon EC2.
- A hosted pair of physical servers.
The results of the research showed that Amazon EC2 performed the least well out of all the platforms surveyed and, in terms of costs, initial findings showed that virtualDCS was the cheapest of the four solutions.
Three important recommendations drawn from the research are:
- Do adopt the cloud – the benefits far outweigh the downsides.
- Don’t treat the cloud the same as conventional hosting environments.
- Don’t think of all cloud solutions as the same.
