Microsoft Service Provider Licensing (SPLA)
Renting, leasing, or lending the Software (including providing commercial hosting services) is also prohibited. (Source END-USER LICENSE AGREEMENT)
The Services Provider License Agreement (SPLA) enables service providers and ISVs with a hosted offering to license Microsoft products on a monthly basis to provide services and hosted applications to their end customers
This is not necessarily a bad thing and can provide many opportunities:
- Remove Capex for Microsoft products
- Remove the cost of server licensing enabling you to just pay for users (Your exchange server licence could be as little as £24 a year)
- If you stop using a package or reduce your users you can reduce your bill
- You can always use the latest version of the software
