Microsoft has announced the release of new Windows 10 devices, including Surface Book and new Lumia phone in its latest presentation.
During the 90 minute presentation, Panos Panay, head of engineering at Microsoft said: “We have competitors, you might have noticed. They are chasing us, what do you do? Do you double down and bring the thunder or do you reinvent the category again?”
In its latest product launch, it appears that Microsoft has done both and didn’t shy from making comparisons with its rival Apple, along with a few jibes throughout the presentation.
Some of its new products include:
According to Panay, compared to the MacBook Pro, the company’s Surface book is twice as fast and in his demonstration of the device he transferred 3GB of data in just four seconds.
Surface Book is the first Microsoft laptop, with a 6th gen Intel Core i5 and up to 1TB of storage. The 13.5 inch touchscreen is also detachable and works with the surface pro 4 dock. The battery life also doesn’t drain when the device is closed. Panay boasted that it is “the most powerful laptop on the planet”
Surface Pro 4
Surface Pro 4 is 30% faster than the Pro 3 and 50% faster than a Macbook air, according to Microsoft. It comes with a fingerprint sensor, quieter keyboard and larger glass trackpad.
“This is the thinnest and most powerful core PC ever to ship,” said Panay.
In addition to the Surface book, Microsoft demonstrated the latest skills in its HoloLens, which is a mixed reality gaming system. HoloLens creates holograms which users can hold and move as the user moves their hand. HoloLens is anticipated to launch in 2016.
The company also announced the Lumia 950 smart phone, with a 5.2 inch display, along with a Lumia 950XL which has a 5.7 inch display. The phones come with a 20 megapixel camera, flash technology to avoid red eye and a USB-C connector charger.
Appealing to business users, both phones can also run universal Windows 10 applications, including Office and Edge.
“This is supposed to be the most productive phone you’ve ever picked up,” said Panay.
Microsoft’s latest watch the Microsoft ‘Band 2’ is geared up towards its health conscious consumers, enabling them to track their exercise, calorie intake and sleep. It was designed with golfers, cyclists, runners and gym goers in mind. It will launch on the 30th October this year.
