Outstanding company growth unites Colin Meakin and old friends at virtualDCS

The Cloud Computing experts are celebrating the end of another exceptional financial year and are looking towards the future, as they welcome Colin Meakin as a non-executive director.

Colin’s new position has been driven by the company’s rapid growth delivering solutions from its own cloud platform, including IaaS, SaaS, and Veeam Cloud Backup & Replication services.

Colin Meakin joins virtualDCS

The virtualDCS company directors have all worked with Colin in one of his previous positions over 10 years ago, and the formidable team is thrilled to be working together again.

Colin has a prestigious background in the IT industry with a proven record of driving business success, having held boardroom positions at several key organisations, that went on to be industry success stories.

One of which includes the ICM Computer Group plc, where he helped grow the business from start-up to £80m turnover. Colin will be injecting both this passion and experience into his new role at virtualDCS, helping to propel the business onto the next chapter of success.

Richard May, Managing Director at virtualDCS said: “virtualDCS has grown dramatically each financial year to date and appointing Colin as a non-executive director is the first step on the next stage of our growth plan.

From working with him personally, we know that Colin has a wealth of industry knowledge that will be nothing but beneficial to virtualDCS.”

Collin commented on his new appointment: “It’s great for us to be working together again, especially in such an innovative, forward-thinking company like virtualDCS.

I’m looking forward to helping the business continue to grow and build upon the last 10 years of success.”

September of this year marks 10 years since virtualDCS was founded and the team is now looking forward to the next 10. Growing every day, virtualDCS is constantly expanding its excellent delivery team and is now focussed on expanding its thriving sales team.

virtualDCS BSI certification

We’ve passed again! virtualDCS recertifies its ISO 27001 status

The renewed ISO 27001 accolade showcases the team’s continuous commitment to information security and data protection.

Looking at the entire scope of the business, from how the company purchases teabags to its comprehensive staff vetting procedure, the BSI assessed and commended virtualDCS on its processes and unique structure.

virtualDCS BSI certification

ISO 27001 is the international standard for best practice for information security management systems, covering technical and business controls that ensure a company is managing its data in the most secure way possible.

Richard May, Managing Director of virtualDCS said:

“There’s often some confusion around the standards and what they cover, but in essence, the re-certification shows that we’re managing customer data in the most secure way possible. This means that anyone that works with us can continue to be confident that we’re handling their information with the utmost sensitivity.

Many businesses that have an ISO 27001 certification tend to heavily limit the scope of the audit, but we wanted to encapsulate the entire business and its practices. If we’re going to be certified, then we’re going to do it right.”

Re-certification was truly a team effort as each employee within the company is responsible for a set of unique standard operating procedures. These procedures are monitored and updated by the appointed team member. virtualDCS chose to deploy this unique approach so that information security would be at the forefront of everyone’s mind and at the heart of the business.

It was also great to hear that every apprentice they’ve hired previously is still with the company, having moved up the ranks into more advanced roles. I’m really looking forward to getting started in my new position and absorbing as much information as I can from the team.”

Ross Devine, Head of Support at virtualDCS said: “virtualDCS has been welcoming support apprentices into the company for over 6 years now and our first ever apprentice is still with us. For us, it makes much more sense to have an employee ‘learn on the job’ as they have a direct impact on the business from day one… it’s also much more stimulating than working from a textbook!”

Thomas Keighley, Regional Sales Manager North/North East for QA commented on Joe’s new position:

“We are immensely proud to help young talent in their journey into new careers working closely with fantastic companies like virtualDCS. They open the opportunities up for apprentices to gain qualifications and experience in the working environment.

virtualDCS have seen the benefit of growing your own talent via Tech apprenticeships and we are proud to help mould the future through this opportunity and training for the individuals and the company”

Why should you Backup Microsoft Office 365?

Even though Microsoft aims to offer an ‘always accessible’ service, the one thing it doesn’t provide is a comprehensive backup solution.

There’s a common misconception that Microsoft automatically backs up Microsoft Office 365 data, but the truth is that Microsoft only offers the very limited protection of a recycle bin and mail box preserver feature.

backup microsoft office 365

Recent industry reports tell us that 70% of data lost from Software as a Service applications is due to accidental deletion, or through the malicious deletion of files by end users.

We’ll tell you more about these features below, but the bottom line is if an IT manager isn’t backing up information independently, they’re simply leaving data at risk. It is the organisation’s responsibility to protect the information directly and the only way to do this is with a hybrid solution.

Standard Microsoft Office 365 tools aren’t enough

Microsoft allows the business administrator to customise the organisation’s data retention period within a recycle bin before the data is automatically deleted. Although this feature allows the data to be retained for longer it will use up disk space rapidly and create considerable expense.

Another protection feature provided through Microsoft Office 365 is the ability to preserve a mailbox for a period of time when a user leaves the organisation. If this is not retained before the user leaves, or if the user decides to manually empty all folders the information is permanently lost.

An alternative solution – Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365

For any Microsoft Office 365 customers looking to protect their data, we’re more than happy to recommend Veeam Cloud Connect. As a Veeam partner, we’ve seen first-hand on many, many occasions how powerful the backup solution is.

Working together, we can help you to:
  • Take control of your Microsoft office 365 data
  • Reduce time and effort restoring your emails
  • Migrate email data between Microsoft Office 365 and on-premise Exchange
  • Protect against data loss scenarios that aren’t covered by Microsoft’s recycle bin or preserve mailbox facilities.
